Can popcorn ceilings be smoothed?
Yes — popcorn ceilings can be fully smoothed, and it's the most requested upgrade we do across Kitchener-Waterloo. The process involves scraping off the textured popcorn coating, applying two skim coats of joint compound to create a flat, seamless surface, priming, and finishing with two coats of paint.
- Unpainted popcorn ceiling: $4.50/sqft all-inclusive (removal + 2 skim coats + primer + 2 coats paint)
- Latex-painted popcorn ceiling: $6.50/sqft all-inclusive
- Oil-base painted popcorn ceiling: $7.50/sqft all-inclusive
- Typical 3-bedroom home: $2,000–$4,500 total
Before smoothing, homes built before the mid-1980s may have chrysotile asbestos mixed into the original texture. Under Ontario Regulation 278/05, testing is required before disturbing suspect material — we coordinate this testing at cost ($300–$500, no markup). Removal itself isn't mandated by law, but once asbestos is confirmed absent or safely addressed, we proceed with smoothing. Call us at (519) 729-7394 for a free quote.
