How common is asbestos in popcorn ceilings in Canada?

Very common — if your home was built or renovated before the mid-1980s, there's a strong chance your popcorn ceiling contains chrysotile asbestos, which was widely mixed into ceiling texture through the 1970s and into the mid-1980s. It's not something you can tell just by looking at it.

  • Ontario Regulation 278/05 governs how asbestos-containing material must be handled once it's disturbed
  • Testing is required before any removal or sanding begins — removal itself isn't mandated by law, and the Ontario Building Code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings
  • We coordinate asbestos testing at cost: $300–$500, no markup

Homes built after the mid-1980s are lower risk but not guaranteed asbestos-free, so testing is still the only way to know for sure. Call us at (519) 729-7394 and we'll walk you through the testing process before any work starts. KW Popcorn Ceiling Removal · Waterloo service area · Google Reviews
