How to get rid of a stippled ceiling?
Getting rid of a stippled (popcorn) ceiling means professional scraping, skim-coating, and repainting — a DIY scrape is messy and risky if asbestos is present. In Kitchener-Waterloo, chrysotile asbestos was commonly mixed into ceiling texture before the mid-1980s, so any home built before then should be tested before the material is disturbed. Testing costs $300–$500 at cost with no markup, and we coordinate it for you — we don't perform licensed abatement ourselves. Under Ontario Regulation 278/05, testing is required before disturbing suspect material, though removal itself isn't mandated by law and the Ontario Building Code doesn't regulate popcorn ceilings.
Our all-inclusive pricing (removal, 2 skim coats, primer, 2 coats of paint):
- Unpainted popcorn ceiling: $4.50/sqft
- Latex-painted ceiling: $6.50/sqft
- Oil-base painted ceiling: $7.50/sqft
